Edge Data Centres

Our Edge Data Centres usually span around 25-40 available racks. They are strategically located close to population centres and at the edge of a network that faces the end user. They are ideal for low latency and applications such as Artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, Data Recovery, Gaming, Content Delivery, Connected Health, Video Surveillance storage and processing and more.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Remote Hands Work?

You don’t have to physically come to site to have things done within your rack.  You may need a server rebooted, a cable unplugged or moved to a new switch or you may wish to have equipment sent to the Data Centre to be installed within it, we can do all of these things and more for you if you require.

Every customer gets 15 mins free per month for this sort of work.  We can also do project work (installing kit, moving kit around, cabling etc) of which we charge £85 per hour +VAT.

Tell me more about the on-site facilities

We have a generous range of facilities at our Data Centres for our customers to enjoy when on site:

  • An on-site gym (with free high speed WiFi)
  • Free dedicated parking within our own car park (by arrangement)
  • 15m loading bay (for large vans etc)
  • Kitchen, toilets, and shower facilities
  • Meeting rooms with WiFi, whiteboards and laptops
  • 32A three phase (24Kw) electric car charging points
  • High Speed WiFi throughout the entire facility

How many U's are usable within the rack?

You get to use all of the space that we advertise. Unlike many other providers, we believe in providing you with the full space that you signed up to.

For example, the Quarter Rack (10U) product provides you with 10U of usable space, no less.

We can do this because we use over-sized cabinets, vertical PDU’s and connectivity hand-off points are located on top of the racks so you don’t have to sacrifice precious rack space.

Why not come and take a look for yourself?

How is the energy that we'd use Renewable?

We generate our own renewable energy from the various power plants that we have around the region, that power the Baltic Network.  Please see our Renewable Energy Page for a more detailed explanation.

Is there internet included in the rack packages?

Yes, we include a 1 Gbps Internet connection (with a single public IP address /31) with each rack taken.  We offer this on a 100Mbps committed data rate basis, meaning that although you will have a 1Gbps unrestricted port, your usage must be no greater than 100 Mbps continuous use, measured over a 30 day period.

You can upgrade this allowance at any time to 200Mbps, 500Mbps and 1Gbps while also changing the port speed from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps or 40Gbps.

Remember, Baltic operates as a neutral data centre, you are more than welcome to buy Internet Transit from the range of other carriers that feed our facility.  As cross connects are free, you may find it beneficial to shop around for quotes from them.

Do I have to go with Baltic for my connectivity?

No, you can bring in your own transit, layer 2 or point to point connectivity if required.  Baltic won’t always be the most cost effective transit provider available and we’d recommend customers shop around for the best deal.

The purpose of our neutral  data centres are to provide space and not necessarily connectivity and although we’d like to do business on both, we appreciate that some customers may be competitors or have existing relationships with one and have their own network they wish to bring on site and we very much welcome this.

This is why we founded the Liverpool Internet Exchange of course.

What other networks are present in your Data Centres?

As a neutral data centre, you can connect with members at IX Liverpool (Liverpool’s Internet Exchange) BTVirgin MediaIX ReachNeos NetworksTelcom NetworksVodafoneGiant Communications, Refine Group and LCR Connect (ITS).  We are also adding new providers all of the time in order to expand the choice of providers available.

In addition to the above, we also have dual 100Gbps layer 2 circuits from our data centres going to Manchester Teledata and London Telehouse North.  If there is a provider that you’d prefer to use for your connectivity at these data centres, you can use our existing circuits to reach such providers, which also include LINX London and LONAP.

How can I extend my office network into your Data Centre?

If you are an existing Baltic customer and already have Internet or point to point connectivity with us, you can use the same incoming cable to be configured as a multi-Service port.  This provides you with 8 ports that are used to supply your internet (as before) while also presenting new 10Gbps ports as direct layer 2 connections that will terminate within your rack.  This way, it acts as a long point to point network connection between both places, just like having a LAN cable between both locations.

Do you offer long term contracts so that we can fix our costs?

Yes we can offer 12 months or 3 year contracts if you require a fixed cost that we will commit to.  Some customers, especially budget holders need a committed cost for a period of time to work to, just let us know your requirements and I’m sure we can present a few options to you.

Can you provide a separate connection for out of band access?

Yes, this is at an extra cost of £50/m for a 10Mbps port (which is delivered by a copper RJ45 socket within the rack). This can be used for remote access, out of band access and general VPN use for example.
